BT Protection Plans: Total and Permanent Disablement
There are four types of cover in the BT Protection Plans Total and Permanent Disablement range. These include standard 'own occupation' and 'any occupation' cover. Depending on which policy you choose these provide a lump sum payment if you are unable to return to work doing the work you were doing when you made the claim, or to work in any job for which you are reasonably suited.
The additional TPD cover options available from BT are:
- 'Home duties' TPD, an insurance designed for homemakers which will provide a lump sum payment if you become too badly disabled to be able to perform household duties.
- 'General cover' TPD, which applies if you suffer from loss of sight or loss of limbs which takes away your ability to live independently.
Payments made as a result of a TPD claim can be used for any purpose, to help you adjust to your new life and circumstances and achieve financial stability despite your loss of future income.
All four TPD products include a range of features including the payment of a partial benefit if you become partially but permanently disabled, and a $10,000 death benefit to be paid to your family if you die without having made a claim on your policy. BT Protection Plans Income Protection policies usually expire when you reach age 65, but you may also have the option to extend cover beyond this point if you are still working.
Other inclusive benefits include extra payments of up to $5,000 to attend counselling sessions to help you adjust to your disablement; and up to $5,000 for the cost of seeing an authorised financial planner for advice on how to manage or invest your claim proceeds.
